In his talk Ibrahim Mansour will share his research experience and challenges he faced while focusing on the Arabic word tadbīr (“governance” or “management”) as an key term for his history of the Shadhili order. He will present it in comparison with the opposite way, whether human tadbir is needed while relying on God (isqat al-tadbir). He will also explore how the Shadhilis were interacting with other intellectuals and scholars. In doing so, it will argue that the boundaries restricting them and discourses surrounded intellectual life in the late medieval period.
